338 Lapua (.338 Lapua Magnum)
Lapua, the Finnish ammunition and component manufacturer, developed the 338 Lapua Magnum in 1982 in cooperation with a number of partners that ultimately resulted in one of the most successful cartridge introductions in recent times. Essentially a necked down and modified 416 Rigby cartridge loaded to higher pressure, the 338 Lapua Magnum is capable of delivering a 250 grain high ballistic coefficient bullet at approximately 3000 feet per second. Lapua used a differential annealing process in the design and ultimate production of the cartridge case that permits a higher operating pressure. This impressive performance allows the bullet to stay supersonic to great distances. The 338 Lapua Mag has been widely adopted by many military organizations and has seen extensive service in the recent Middle East conflicts. It has the record for the longest confirmed sniper kill in 2009 when an enemy target was taken at a range of 2707 yards.
The .338 Lapua is also a fine long range hunting and competitive round capable of taking nearly any game animal. Of course with the significant power levels that the 338 Lapua has recoil and muzzle blast become issues for shooters to deal with.
