The Mountain Ascent uses Kimber’s legendary 84M action, a reliable system that features a Mauser type claw extractor for true controlled round feeding and extraction. The 84M action was also specifically designed to accommodate cartridges with dimensions similar to .308 Win. Production rifles of a lesser quality simply shorten the bulky full-sized actions to accept the shorter cartridges, making them weigh the same as a magnum. The 84M Mountain Ascent on the other hand weighs just over five lbs, and features an ideal barrel length for optimal velocities. Other features include a wing safety that uses the 3-position, model 70-type pattern; the first position is “fire,” the middle position is “safe” and the third position locks the bolt in place.
