The New Army Target Carbine gave soldiers repeating firepower in 1858 – a time when single-shot muzzleloaders reigned supreme. Although used in limited numbers, revolving carbines like the 1858 New Army Target Carbine gave the individuals that used them the ability to provide accurate sustained fire at long range and a serious advantage over those who still relied on muzzleloading firearms. Revolving long-guns remained in limited use until the advent of metallic, self-contained cartridges and repeating rifles like the legendary Winchester, making them obsolete. The 1858 New Army Target Carbine itself is a larger version of Remington Model 1858. It features a “topstrap” solid frame design, giving it superior durability over the open-top designs that dominated the revolver market. The 1858 New Army Target Carbine also features “safety slots” milled into the cylinder where the hammer could rest, eliminating the threat of accidental discharge if dropped.
