Heckler & Koch pays tribute to the United Sates Marines and one of the most reliable weapons seen on the modern battlefield with the MR27 Limited Edition. The MR27 Special Edition is a semiautomatic version of the M27. It gets its name from the 1st Marine Division, 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment – the unit that devised the concept behind a the MR27 Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR) as a replacement for the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. The Infantry Automatic Rifle program called for a magazine-fed 5.56mm automatic rifle that could be operated by a single Marine that had greater accuracy, reliability, and less weight than existing belt-fed 5.56 machineguns. During a rigorous testing process at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Testing Center and Air-Ground Combat Center, the MR27 IAR shattered all expectations, earning it the nickname "The most tested weapon in the history of the Marine Corps."

Just like its Marine Corps counterpart, the MR27's sheer reliability is thanks to the H&K proprietary gas piston operating system similar to the one found on H&K's renowned G36. It employs a piston and a solid operating ‘pusher’ rod in place of the gas tube normally found in certain firearms. This method of operation virtually eliminates malfunctions that are common to direct impingement gas systems since hot carbon fouling and waste gases do not enter the receiver area. This increases the reliability of the weapon, reduces operator cleaning time, minimizes heat transfer to the bolt and bolt carrier; and lessens wear and tear on critical components.
