"What scope is right for me?" The answer is "it depends".
Most dangerous game is taken at close ranges so a short focal length scope like the Zenith 1.1-4x24 is ideal. It has a wide field of view that allows you to pick up your target quickly and shoot with both eyes open on low magnification.
For all-around shooting, consider our Zenith 1.5-6 x 42. Set on low magnification, it is perfect for close shots in thick forest and bush, while set on high magnification it gives the ability to make most of the longer shots that you may encounter.
If you tend to hunt open country, or game typically requiring longer, most hunters want higher magnification. If you hunt varmints, the Schmidt Bender Varmint 4-16 x 50 is the only first focal plane model in its class offering a specialized reticle for small targets at extended ranges. If maximum light transmission is critical, choose a larger objective lens combined with lower magnification. Also consider a fixed power scope as they generally perform better under low light than variables. It depends on your rifle, too. Flat-shooting rifles will generally benefit from higher magnification scopes. Conversely, large caliber double rifles and bolt actions designed for close shots require short focal length scopes. Keep in mind that all scopes look relatively bright in the middle of the day. The true quality of a riflescope becomes apparent at last light or even after dark. The only way you can evaluate performance is to test your scope in actual hunting conditions. Another frequent question is whether or not illumination might be valuable. Our opinion is that if you can afford the extra cost, buy it. You only need to miss the shot of a lifetime once to regret not having had it. Although it does add about three ounces to your gun, the ability to shoot much later or earlier in the day makes it well worth having.
