I have yet to test it at known distances beyond 300 yards. I stretched out my 100 yard tape on a flat part of my yard that is mildly and evenly sloped, put a stake down at each end, and moved the tape to give 200 yards between my vantage point and the beginning of the last measured portion on which we left the tape on the ground to get measurements between 200 and 300 yards. I had my daughter move along the tape while holding a white piece of cardboard as a target. Both the straight-line and angle-compensated distances worked out accurately to within the same one yard measurement after applying cosine indicated by a phone app's inclinometer feature, which gave my 13 year old a chance to practice some basic trigonometry. I hope to get some range time booked at a private 1,200 yard facility this summer with known distance targets to further verify the Razor HD 4000's accuracy, but I already trust it more than I do my old $150 Nikon. Besides hunting and shooting, I intend to use it for mapping and orienteering while hiking state parks. I think the old Nikon is going into my golf bag! Menus are easily navigated, glass is clear, and the illumination settings - while coarse - vary widely enough to give good visibility without blasting my irises under every level of ambient light in which I've played with it at all hours of the day and evening. It has a very solid feel, without being unduly weighty. The 1/4"-20 tpi female socket on the bottom was a must-have feature for me, since there's no way I can hold it still enough on open prairie, standing in gusting winds amid tall wild growth, without a tripod. The reversible belt clip feature was convenient for me, in that the clip can just be removed altogether. The included elastic lanyard is a bit on the short side for my purposes, but there are lanyard attachment points on both sides of the ocular end of the device, allowing me to simply put a 3/8" split ring on the left side (where it doesn't interfere with my right-handed grip) and attach a small carabiner to it, through which I've looped some shock cord of my needed length. While I expect good life from the included top-name-brand lithium battery, the screw-in battery door on the device has a fold-down turning aid which will no doubt make battery changes painless in the field. The included case is very substantial, and will remain in my shooting pack; no need to add the expense of an aftermarket "tough case." The device came with the necessary hex key for removing or relocating the belt clip, as well. All in all, it seems I got much more than had any right to expect from Vortex's $500 price tag. In summary, I could not possibly be more pleased with this purchase within these early weeks after receiving it.
